    Beddgelert is a tremendously picturesque village, nestled beneath the southern end of the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) massif at the confluence of the Rivers Glaslyn and Colwyn. Its gorgeous location, charming train line and excellent hiking trails make it a very popular stop off.

    Yr Wyddfa's quieter southern flanks can be accessed from the village but Beddgelert is more often associated with the Moel Hebog range to the west, where there are some wonderful trails.

    The village is also strongly associated with the legend of the famously loyal hound Gelert. Gelert's Grave is just to the south of the village.

      The village is probably named after an early Christian missionary and leader named Celert (or Cilert) who settled here early in the 8th century. The earliest mention of the name Beddgelert appears on a document from 1258, and the recorded name is "Bekelert". In a document from 1269 it is mentioned as "Bedkelerd".

        Amazing village. Lovely hikes surrounded by the Welsh mountains. Plenty of food stops. Overall it is an amazing place.

          One of the best located villages out there for outdoor access, quaintness and nearby attractions. It is an iconic place for Welsh people too as it is home of the legend of Gelert.

            Beddgelert is a magical place and starting point for beautiful hikes. The steam train takes us to the Highlands. From the train station in Rhyd-Ddu you can go to Snowdon, the highest mountain in Snowdonia. For shorter hikes, you can get a map for £1 from the tourist information office.

                You can enjoy walking in the valleys and mountains of the Snowdonia National Park and this also applies to the area around Beddgelert. There are short and longer routes through the Nant Gwynant valley, along Lake Llyn Dinas and through the Pass of Aberglaslyn, past the Cwm Llan waterfalls and past the old copper mines of Cwm Bychan.
