The Schillerplatz was a cattle market from 1827. In 1905 the Schiller Monument was erected, which was replaced in 1989 by a bust created in the 19th century by the sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker. The carved wooden coats of arms from 1993 were a gift from one of the three twin cities of the city of Backnang, the southern Hungarian city of Bácsalmás.

In the 19th century, today's Schillerplatz was still outside the closed development of the city. The three adjacent streets had given the open space its characteristic triangular shape. The property was used by changing private owners as a grass and tree garden. In 1827 the city bought the square and used it as a cattle market. The gymnasts from Backnang also held exercises there until 1878, says Helmut Bomm's book “What street signs tell”. In addition, housewives used the area as a laundry area.

In 1905, celebrations took place in Backnang on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Friedrich Schiller. Shortly before the celebration, the city received notification that a Backnang citizen had donated a Schiller bust. For his booklet published in 1986, Bomm researched the articles in Murrtal-Boten, the forerunner of the Backnang district newspaper. On May 2, 1905, it was said that “a citizen of the city who wanted to be anonymous was Dannecker's bust of Schiller as it was. Mayestät, the king made a gift to the American Boston University, gives the city of Backnang a sandstone plinth ”. The report also said that the memorial would be erected on the previous cattle market, which should be expanded accordingly as the future Schillerplatz. Another article said that the bust, a bronze cast, had been made in Geislingen an der Steige.

The original bust was vandalized in 1986 and replaced by another three years later.
