The castle Herzberger gradually rehabilitated. Contrary to the information in the parking lot, the museum and the castle restaurant are open. We participated in a very nice and informative tour. Highly recommended!

Tip: the restaurant is not to be despised 😉👍

History of Herzberg Castle:

The castle is four-winged and has its origins in the 11th century as a medieval castle.
The present building from 1510 was for a long time the residence of the Grubenhagener line of the house Braunschweig-Lüneburg. It was Duke George (1582-1641) who left Herzberg in 1636, named Hanover a royal residence, and whose descendant was named King of England as George I (1660-1727).

In the building monument Welfenschloss in heart mountain is among other things also the museum. It presents in a department the history of the castle and lordship of the Welfen in Herzberg, i.a. with a facsimile of the Gospel of Henry the Lion. Here is the Schloss Herzberg as a residence in the center. Furthermore, the museum shows special aspects of city and economic history: the Herzberger rifle manufactory, mills in Herzberg and the organ builder Johann Andreas Engelhardt, who had his workshop in Herzberg. As a special feature, the museum has a recordable functional model with original components from historic Engelhardt organs, regularly hosting organ concerts. All departments provide activity stations, not just for kids. In addition, the museum houses an exhibition of the Lower Saxony State Forestry Administration on the forest history of the Harz and the connections between forest use, forestry and ore mining and a presentation of the Esperanto Society.
