The Spreewaldbahn, in Lower Sorbian Błośańska zeleznica, was a meter-gauge narrow-gauge railway in the Spreewald, from whose operating center Straupitz the narrow-gauge railway lines led to Lübben, Goyatz, Lieberose and Cottbus. The small railway was popularly called "Spreewaldguste", "Bimmelguste" or "Tschuchte" and is still one of the most famous narrow-gauge railways in Germany.

The tracks in the area of the station building were only used for passenger traffic. On the north side of the building there was only a stubby track with a platform.

The other tracks were to the west of the station building. The passenger trains also had to push back here in order to move the locomotive. In addition to the transfer track, there was a freight handling facility with a loading track and three roller trestles for placing standard-gauge wagons on narrow-gauge roller trestles.

For changing passengers, there was a passenger tunnel at the southern end of the freight supply road, from which access to the platforms and the reception building of the state train station was possible.

Towards the end of the 19th century, planning began on a route for a railway that would open up the Spreewald and connect the cities of Lübben and Cottbus. In 1897, construction began on the so-called Spreewaldbahn in Straupitz, which was fully put into operation on December 7, 1899. At the final stop in Cottbus, a temporary wooden structure initially served as a reception building. The current reception building was built in 1904 by the “Berlin Railway Company J. R. Becker & Co.” and inaugurated on December 5, 1904. The station was originally called the Cottbus connecting station because there was a connection to the Berlin–Görlitz railway through the state train station located immediately to the south. On January 3, 1970, the station ceased operations.
