The basement of the town's landmark, built of mighty boulders, dates back to 1408. In 1605, the building was extended by two floors. Thus an open arbor was created, in which also court was held. On the top of the town hall tower a ship testifies of the connection between Meppen and the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. Today, a café is housed in the town hall. The historic council chamber is still used for receptions and civil marriages.
