The Nivelsteiner Sandwerke und Sandsteinbrueche GmbH (NSW) is a family business founded in 1904. It is an important supplier of raw materials to the glass, foundry and building materials industry. At the edge of the Wormdal near Herzogenrath, just across the border at Kerkrade in South Limburg, we find the quarry „Nivelstein“ and the quarry „Hochfeld. The quarries mainly extract the raw materials quartz sand and quartz gravel.
Historical excavations show that the first opencast mining activities took place at Nivelstein as early as Roman times. The quarry was mainly used for the extraction of sandstone until the Middle Ages.
Historic buildings such as the Aachen Cathedral, the Ponttor and in the Netherlands the Rolduc Abbey were built with these stones. The sand types present are distinguished by a purity of 99.8% SiO2, which consists of uniform, water-clear quartz grains that are largely free of contaminants, so that the content of iron and heavy minerals in the sand is low.
