The Schöntal Monastery was founded in 1145 by the Counts of Froburg and handed over to the Benedictine order.
In 1525 Schöntal fell victim to the devastation caused by the rebellious farmers in the area. Soon afterwards, the religious foundation was abolished by the Reformation and the buildings served secular purposes from then on. In 1541 the monastery property passed into the hands of the Basel Citizens' Hospital, where it remained until the 19th century. Fortunately, since the Basler Bürgerspital sold the Schöntal estate in the 19th century, it has remained in the hands of the same family. Within this, the Wackernagel family, there was a division between three Wackernagel siblings a few decades ago.
