    The Neptune fountain, nicknamed al Żigànt in dialect ("the Giant" in Italian) by the people of Bologna due to the size of the statue of Neptune, is located in Bologna in Piazza del Nettuno.

    Fruit of the collaboration between Giambologna and Tommaso Laureti, the work was commissioned by Pier Donato Cesi (1522-1586) to glorify the papal government of Pope Pius IV and was finished in 1566.

            The Neptune Fountain, one of the symbols of Bologna, has been standing here probably since 1566, and in order for it to be located here, the entire impressive building was demolished in those years. It presents a majestic figure of Neptune surrounded by four sea nymphs (Nereids) holding their breasts from which streams of water gush. Interestingly, Neptune's trident was the inspiration for the Maserati logo, a luxury car manufacturer from Bologna.
