The Wolf Gate is an impressive testimony to the defensive strength of the old town. It is the oldest preserved gate in Esslingen and was built in the first half of the 13th century as part of the city wall. This is where the trade route from the south led into the city. The two almost life-sized stone lions above the passageway are symbols of the power of the Staufers. The smooth blocks in the lower part are characteristic, and were intended to prevent enemies from climbing the tower. Above them are humped blocks typical of the Staufer period. A wolf relief can be seen inside above the doorway. The gate received its delicate bell tower in the 17th century.
