The history of this monastery can be grouped around three main axes: El Paular-Cartuja (1390-1835), El Paular disentailed (1835-1954) and El Paular recovered for monastic life (1954-until today).
huerta_paularThe foundation of the Charterhouse of Santa María de El Paular dates back to 1390. The House of Trastamara granted it great privileges and defrayed the costs of the works throughout the reign. Juan I began to erect the first Cartuja de Castilla, where there were already some hunting palaces that are cited in Alfonso X's Book of Falconry and a Hermitage called Santa María del Pobolar. This is how the first Cartuja de Castilla was built and the sixth of the Carthusian foundations in Spain.

A beautiful monastery is worth the visit. Better to book in advance online, to enjoy the guided tour. The visit consists of two parts. The first is free with information panels on the history of the Monastery. The second is accompanied by a Benedictine Friar who explains and shows you the place.

The Royal Monastery of Santa María de El Paular is a monastery located in the Spanish municipality of Rascafría, on the Madrid side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, in the Lozoya valley, Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument since 1876, it is state-owned and attached to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. It was, from its foundation in 1390 until the 19th century, a Carthusian monastery. In 1954 it began to operate as a Benedictine priory.
