The 8.4-hectare Kungsparken was inaugurated by King Oscar II in 1872. Its official name at the time was Kung Oscars Park, but it quickly became known as Kungsparken.
Kungsparken is the oldest park in Malmö and was created on land that previously belonged to the Malmöhus fortress. The expansive park features several ponds and a large collection of approximately 130 tree species, some of them very old, from three continents.
The centerpiece of the park is the magnificent cast-iron fountain, built in 1882. North of the fountain is an old grotto, which was once the park's main attraction.

Malmöhus (also: Malmöhus slott) is a castle complex in the southern Swedish city of Malmö. The oldest parts were made between 1526 and 1530 in the Renaissance style. The building is now home to Malmö's art museum and the city museum. The latter museum also includes the commandant's house and a Dutch windmill in the adjacent park.
