    Saint John of Nepomuk was a priest (Vicar General of the Archbishop) in Bohemia who was martyred in Prague in 1393. He was thrown from Prague's Charles Bridge into the Vltava River by royal decree and drowned. His statue can still be found on or near many bridges today – including this one. He is not only considered a popular "bridge saint" but is also the patron saint of the seal of confession. In many depictions of him, he holds a cross in one hand, sometimes placing a finger to his lips with the other as a sign of silence (which was heard during confession). The feast day of Saint John of Nepomuk in the calendar of saints is March 20.

      Johannes Nepomuk or Johannes von Pomuk (Latin: Joannes de Pomuk, Czech: Jan Nepomucký or Jan z Pomuka, * around 1350 in Pomuk near Pilsen; † March 20, 1393 in Prague) was a Bohemian priest and martyr. He was in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII. canonized and is considered a "bridge saint" and patron of the confessional secret.



      In addition to crosses and depictions of Mary, sculptures of St. Nepomuk in Catholic areas of southern Germany, Bohemia, Moravia and Austria are the most common Christian stone figures found outside of church buildings in the open countryside. Very often statues of the saint stand on or next to bridges. The most famous of them, created by Johann Brokoff in 1683, is located on Prague's Charles Bridge at the point where the saint was thrown into the Vltava.

        John of Nepomuk was born in 1350 in Pomuk near Pilsen. By 1369, he was a notary and secretary in the archbishop's entourage. In 1380, Nepomuk was ordained a priest and subsequently studied law, graduating in Prague. He transferred to the University of Padua, where he received his doctorate in canon law in 1387.

        In 1389, the Prague Archbishop, John of Jenstein, appointed him vicar general. Over the next two years, the power struggles between the Bohemian King Wenceslas IV and Archbishop John of Jenstein escalated. These conflicts essentially concerned the appointment of bishops and the transfer of ecclesiastical offices in Bohemia. The king attempted to downsize the Archbishopric of Prague by establishing a new Diocese of Kladrau and to diminish the archbishop's power. When the archbishop anticipated the king's appointment of the bishop for the Diocese of Kladrau, the king was duped. Because the archbishop fled, John of Nepomuk, the highest-ranking remaining cleric, was first arrested and tortured by the king, and then, as punishment, thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River and drowned.
