The almost circular pond, called the Maar, characterizes the townscape with its island. The earliest written mention of the Mair dates back to 1494.

Such maars used to be common in the towns of Erkelenzer Land - even the city of Erkelenz had one where Franziskanerplatz is today - but today there is only such a body of water in Bellinghoven. In the neighboring Jülicher Land, Hottorf also has another maar. Unlike the Eifel maars, they are not of volcanic origin.

These water areas had different functions, they were fire water ponds, cattle troughs and horse ponds, fish ponds and were used to keep domestic ducks and geese. When frozen over in winter, ice cutters sawed the ice into blocks and used it in ice cellars for refrigeration. A use as flax roasting can be ruled out because of the putrefaction gases that occur there.

The body of water is fed by rainwater from the surrounding roof areas and streets. There is no contact with groundwater. The Bellinghovener Fliess serves as a drain, which drains from the edge of the village as an open ditch in a north-easterly direction towards the Niers.

In Bellinghoven, the Maar has always been used for leisure activities, for ice skating in winter and for boating in summer. The lawn by the Maar is used by the clubs as a fairground. The maypole of the village youth is also erected here every year. Numerous seating areas invite you to linger.

A historic water pump is reminiscent of the time before the water pipe was introduced, the original pumping station is only a few meters away, the associated well is still preserved but covered. A medlar, the Geldern Rose, commemorates the village's 700th anniversary.
