This memorial commemorates the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the French and Allied armies who died during the withdrawal of the Battle of Dunkerque, in May and June 1940.

In May and June 1940, Dunkirk was the scene of a turning point in the history of the Second World War. The evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers to England was accomplished in nine days.

After Britain's declaration of war on Germany in September 1939, the situation suddenly changes when Germany launches an attack on the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg on May 10, 1940. In a few days, the German army disrupts the allies in the north of France. Fearing that the English troops would be captured and thus lose the battle, Great Britain decided to evacuate its overseas troops via Dunkirk. “Operation Dynamo” as it is called by the British, is conducted under the orders of Admiral Ramsay.

Everything that can float in southern England is mobilized: warships, trading ships, cutters, sailing boats and so on. Hundreds of “little ships”, who have never ventured less than a few miles from the coast, take part in this adventure. Under constant air raids, almost 340,000 Allies, including 120,000 French and several thousand Belgian soldiers, could be evacuated from Dunkirk. 40,000 soldiers who were unable to leave Dunkirk in time were made prisoners of war. It is precisely these soldiers who slowed down the German advance and thus contributed to the success of the operation.

Very beautifully designed memorial on the beach and not far from the Dunkerque 1940 Museum. The Allied Memorial honors the Allied soldiers killed in Operation Dynamo: “In honorable memory of the pilots, sailors and soldiers of the French and Allied armies who gave their lives in the Battle of Dunkirk May and June 1940.”
