The briquette factory owes its name to the small community Witznitz, on whose former territory it is located. The place itself had to give way between 1941 and 1944 lignite mining. Client for the construction of the Witznitz coal works was the German-Austrian mining company Dresden. Beginning of the demolition of the Witznitz I mine was September 20, 1911. Economic considerations for achieving the shortest route from coal production to coal processing led to the construction of the briquette factory following the excavation of the opencast mine. The construction of the factory and the affiliated power plant was started in 1912 and its central facilities were put into operation in 1913. The raw coal was first supplied from the adjoining opencast mine Witznitz I. The coal was mined in the chaff operation and delivered to the briquette factory with the help of a two-kilometer-long main cable car and two feeder cable cars.

At the time the plant was founded, the open-cast mine and the factory belonged to the Witznitz coal works, which was founded by the German-Austrian mining company in Dresden. The maximum workforce was recorded for 1920 as 1,445 employees (of which 538 were in overburden, 398 in the mine, 497 in the factory, 12 in the brickworks). In 1922 the plant was transferred to a subsidiary of Deutsche Erdöl-AG (DEA). After the Second World War, the plant was converted into a state-owned company with changing parent affiliation.
In addition to briquette production, other by-products such as steam and electricity were produced - products that became increasingly important for external consumers. From 1990, the plant was transferred to MIBRAG, later to LMBV. The last pressing of a total of around 38 million tonnes of briquettes produced took place in 1991, until the plant was closed in 1992.
