Monzella was first mentioned in 1127 in a donation of goods in ... Monzel.... by the priest Johannes, Canonicus of S. Marien in Trier. In a visitation protocol from 1569, a chapel with 3 altars and 3 chalices is mentioned in Monzel with St. Nicholas as its patron saint. Monzel is a branch of the parish of St. Peter Osann and has to deliver 1 barrel of wine annually for the services of the pastor. A church was mentioned in 1656. On April 10, 1787, the foundation stone for a new building or reconstruction was laid and the bells were hung in September. The Monzel branch had its own early mass servants until Johann Ahrweiler, who was appointed pastor when the church was elevated to a parish in 1833.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Monzel is dedicated, is - alongside Saint Martin - one of the most popular saints of all. His memorial day, December 6th, is probably known to almost every child in Germany - and far beyond.
On the eve of this day, children used to put their shoes or boots - which had of course been carefully polished - in front of the door so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to put out a small gift of food for the donkey, Saint Nicholas's mount (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).
