On Kruisberg one finds a very picturesque Stations of the Cross. The idea originated from a 15th century friar who had made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and in 1461 imitated a Palestinian Stations of the Cross in Herentals. On top of the mountain is the Holy Cross Chapel (before 1534). The Holy Sepulchre Chapel (1761) was destroyed in 1944 (V-bomb) and restored in 1947. The old Stations of the Cross, which was repeatedly destroyed and restored, certainly did not consist of fourteen stations as it does now. Perhaps the oldest Stations of the Cross on Kruisberg consisted of only one station with the veneration of John and Mary on the cross. In the past, the number of stations of the Stations of the Cross has always been arbitrary and this only changed when the Italian preacher Leonard de Porto Maurizio in the 18th century increased the number of stations on the ferry garden. It was not until the 19th century that Stations of the Cross with ferry garden stations began to be hung in our churches. P.J. Deckers (1801 – 1862), assistant pastor of the Beguinage and one of the oldest historians of the city of Herentals, began in 1835 with the reconstruction of the Holy Cross Chapel and the restoration of the Holy Sepulchre Chapel. In 1837 he added twelve more stations to these chapels so that the Herentalse Way of the Cross, for the first time in its history, had stations. The Herentalse Way of the Cross of Kruisberg is probably the oldest still existing Way of the Cross in the country. Finally, in 1891 – 1893 the chapels of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows were also erected, so that the whole of the sanctuaries of Kruisberg (the ferry garden, Way of the Cross Stations and the Seven Sorrows) has since obtained its current form. If you go up next to the cemetery (Lichtaartsesteenweg 111), you will come across the oldest Stations of the Cross in the country. The Stations of the Cross consist of the seven chapels of the Sorrows of Our Lady.
The large chapel, the Holy Cross Chapel, was built before 1534 and re-erected in 1841. The Chapel of the Entombment (fourteenth station) dates from 1761.
