It is a "floodplain and semi-natural hillside forests with heron colony on the steep slopes of the Kocher valley."

The protected area includes the hillside forest on the right, the Kocherlauf and the Talaue.
This means that not only the breeding biotopes but also at least some of the food biotopes of the bird species that breed there are combined in a large nature reserve.
Major parts of the »Kraftwerkskanal« cultural monument are located in the protected area.
The Vogelhalde Sindringen-Ohrnberg nature reserve is located in the area of the towns of Forchtenberg and Öhringen in Hohenlohekreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The area extends along the Kocher between Sindringen in the northeast and Ohrnberg in the south. The state road L 1045 runs along the south-east and east edge of the area and the L 1050 runs along the north-east edge.
The protected area that exists today was created by ordinance of December 30, 1999 and has a size of around 216 hectares.
