The visit of the Iglesia de San Tomas and the whole environment (market) in Chichicastenango (Guatemala) is an absolute must.
After the conquest by Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado in 1524, the Spaniards destroyed the former Mayan temple there and built the church of Santo Tomás on its pedestal.
To this day, the place at the church is still used by Mayan shamans, who burn incense and candles on the stairs and sometimes offer animal sacrifices.
The 18 steps of the ancient Mayan temple are the same as the months of the Mayan calendar.
