Dunas de Maspalomas: The spectacular dunes are definitely worth seeing and are certainly THE highlight of Gran Canaria.
This is a huge, naturally formed area of shifting dunes that stretches to the sea. The best view is from the "Mirador de las Dunas" viewpoint just behind the palatial "Riu Palace" hotel. The dunes are spectacular and an absolute MUST on Gran Canaria. When you stand in the middle of them, you could almost think you were in the Sahara. They are particularly interesting when it's windy, as you can clearly see the movements and drifts of the dunes. It is particularly beautiful in the early morning (then you are almost alone there and the peace is wonderful) or late afternoon. There is a lot going on then, but the light is at its most beautiful and the dunes look almost golden with a great play of light and shadow. The entire dune area is a nature reserve. Nevertheless, the dunes are threatened by climate change and increasingly frequent strong storms, among other things. Humans also contribute to this through careless behavior and littering. Entering and climbing the dunes is permitted, but you should behave very carefully and respectfully and of course leave NO RUBBISH behind so that this wonderful natural wonder can be preserved for a long time to come!
