When you are on the chapel bridge, take a look at the two railings! Do you notice anything?
The lake side is namely higher than the old town railing.
The reason: the chapel bridge was originally part of the medieval city fortifications and the enemy came from the lake; of the other forest sites (cantons) that were not exactly friendly to the Lucerne people because of their initial orientation towards the Habsburg house. A high sea-side railing offered better protection against projectiles!
In April 1993 the chapel bridge burned down to a large extent and with it many of the triangular paintings, all of them originals. The preserved parts of the bridge can easily be recognized by the darker color of the wood, right up to the charred state.
A largely preserved and very worth seeing wooden bridge is the Spreuer Bridge, located a few hundred meters downstream. It connects the old town at Mühlenplatz with the new town at Kasernenplatz. The needle weir can be seen from it, with which the outflow from Lake Lucerne and thus its water level is regulated. In winter, the needle weir is almost completely closed and the water only flows through parking gaps in the weir and over the turbine of the power plant from the lake to the Reuss. In spring, when the snow melts in the mountains, the needle weir is almost completely open and the Reuss has a high water level - in some years it and the lake even overflow.
