"In 1869, it became known in Duisburg that the Belgian town of Rupelmonde, the birthplace of cartographer Gerhard Mercator, was planning to erect a seven-meter-high bronze monument for Mercator, although the cartographer was born there, his most famous maps, the map of Europe from 1554 and his map of the world 1569, however, were created in his workshop in the Duisburg Oberstraße, so a duel was launched in Duisburg a competition project to the Belgian monument from the baptism: Already three months after the start of construction in Belgium, the foundation stone of the Duisburg counterpart was laid.

The sandstone fountain built in the style of historicism shows a two and a half meter high statue of Mercator in a typical Renaissance costume, looking down on a globe standing at his feet. Mercator stands on a structure consisting of four pillars connected with round arches. Between the pillars, four dolphins spit water into a basin. In the four corners of the structure are four children's figures; they symbolize trade (mercury or cadet), trade (cogwheel), shipping (anchor) and science (book).

The inscriptions on the four pediments are "Gerhard Krämer gen. Mercator / born on 5 March 1512 in Rupelmonde / lived and worked in Duisburg since 1552 / died in Duisburg on 2 December 1594". The text can also be interpreted as an attempt of nationalistic appropriation, as it unifies the original Flemish name Gheert de Cremer.
