The economic development of the city of Chemnitz in the 19th century attracted many people to the city, so that in 1875 the inner-city St. John's Parish had to be divided into three parishes, St. John's, St. Pauli and St. Peter. The newly formed St. Peter Parish had to wait a long time for its own church. It was not until 1883, after some difficulties, that it was given a building site for its church. Together with the opera and art collections (formerly the King Albert Museum), the neo-Gothic St. Peter's Church now forms an attractive building ensemble on Theaterplatz.

The church is built in the neo-Gothic style. From the outside, the church impresses with its harmonious combination of sandstone and brick. The church was designed by the Leipzig architect Hans Enger. The decoration and the rich sculptural ornamentation inside and at the main entrance were designed by the Leipzig sculptor Werner Stein. The entrance portal at the main entrance from Theaterplatz, from which one enters the vestibule of the church, is particularly beautifully designed. The inscription "May God bless your entrance" is depicted by the blessing Christ above and decorated with angel heads.
