The important pieces of equipment also include the remains of the ornamental ceiling painting from 1330 on the western vault in the southern aisle, as well as the St. Anne's Chapel from 1508 and the St. Mary's Chapel from the early 14th century. The Renaissance baptismal font dates from 1588, the baroque pulpit from 1693 and the monumental baroque altar depicting the Last Supper from 1700. In the cathedral and in the cloister there are 63 grave slabs made of sandstone with pictures of Havelberg bishops, cathedral provosts, chapter members and their families from the 13th to 18th centuries.

Visible from afar, the St. Marien Cathedral stands above the Havelberg city island on the mountainous northern bank of the Havel. In 946, King Otto I, the later Emperor, founded the diocese in Havelberg east of the Elbe, among other things, in order to bring the Christian faith to the then Slavic-populated areas east of the Elbe.

Havelberg Cathedral is one of the few completely preserved Romanesque-early Gothic buildings east of the Elbe. Just a stone's throw from the banks of the Havel, the cathedral, consecrated in 1170, served as a bishop's seat, while Premonstratensians had already moved into the associated St. Marien monastery. Although a fire devastated large parts of the buildings around 100 years later, the basic Romanesque character has survived in the Gothic conversions and additions. The cathedral has been a Protestant church since the Reformation; the monastery was dissolved in 1819. The Prignitz Museum is located in the former monastery rooms and has an exhibition on the cathedral, settlement and city history of Havelberg.

In the interior of the basilica, visitors can expect important works of art from several eras, including a richly illustrated rood screen with sandstone choir screens and an impressive triumphal cross group, stained glass windows from the early 15th century, the carved choir stalls and detailed sandstone reliefs and candlesticks with figure representations from the 14th century. The most striking feature of Havelberg Cathedral is certainly its massive westwork. It is completely doorless and windowless in the lower area and rises more than 30 meters high. This extremely defensive component is known in architecture as the “Saxon West Bar” – it is believed to have symbolism as a bulwark against evil.
