The Hainberg nature reserve is located on the Rednitz in the area of the towns of Oberasbach and Stein (district of Fürth) and a small part of the city of Nuremberg. The nature reserve, which is part of the Sandachse Franken nature conservation project, has existed since March 1, 1995 and is around 213 hectares in size. Its area was previously used as a training area for the US Army and the Bundeswehr's 270th Transport Battalion stationed in Nuremberg. 195 hectares of the area are therefore managed by the DBU Naturerbe as a natural heritage area.

The Hainberg nature reserve is a habitat and refuge for many endangered plants and animals.

The plants found here include the sand pink, heather pink, sand thyme, silver grass, mountain sandbell and early sedge oat. A special feature is the presence of Austrian mugwort, which is said to have been planted by Croatian soldiers as a wine spice during the Thirty Years' War; in 1632 the Hainberg was part of Wallenstein's camp near Zirndorf.

The insect fauna of the Hainberg includes sand bees, the blue-winged grasshopper and the swallowtail butterfly. The amphibians include the natterjack toad and the spadefoot toad. Rare bird species found in the area include the golden oriole, the wheatear, the red-backed shrike, the whitethroat, the kingfisher, the tawny pipit and the woodlark.

The area contains the largest sandy grassland area in northern Bavaria. Typical of this type of landscape are the low water storage capacity, the low nutrient content of the soil and the extreme temperature differences compared to other biotopes in Central Europe. The loose vegetation, often interrupted by sandy areas, consists of grasses and low-growing herbs. The special thing about the vegetation of the Hainberg is the light, brownish coloring of the grass areas. (Wikipedia)

In another post of this place I had already raved that this nature reserve, which is completely surrounded by urban development, is truly a gem. To really any time of the year / day and almost any weather, you can experience the nature in this area and escape within a very short time of everyday life. I think it is important when all visitors observe the rules of the nature reserve and thus attest to their respect for animals and plants, which are usually too often distributed by people for the purpose of building. The NSG Hainberg shows that nature can reclaim its habitats.

Wallenstein's warehouse:
Here on the Hainberg, Wallenstein set up a huge field camp on July 17, 1632 for which a good 13,000 trees were felled. 31,000 infantrymen, 12,000 horsemen and a train of unknown size camped in it. A total of about 60,000 people were present, which can be described as the largest field camp in world history

Very nice nature reserve. Especially in summer you often meet the shepherd with his sheep and goats. They then live on the Hainberg for almost the entire summer.
