The Capuchin monastery in Werne was built in the years 1671 - 1680 and to this day monks live in the small monastery. Although the Prussian state tried several times to close the monastery, the monks, who had always devoted themselves to a life close to the people, were able to prevent this closure with the help of the population. Today there are still seven monks living in the monastery, who are mainly dedicated to youth work.

Since after the Thirty Years' War three members of the order were already regularly visiting Werne and the council members asked for a "preservation and revitalization of the Catholic religion", three Capuchin brothers settled in Werne in 1659. They were to look after the spiritual well-being of the population. This had become necessary because the only church in Werne, the Christopher Church, only housed two of the eleven priests who had been active before the war. Their duties also included leading religious education in schools.
