According to legend, the Heinzelmännchen were Cologne's house spirits. They did their work at night when the citizens were sleeping. But because they were observed doing so, they disappeared forever. In addition to their small size, typical attributes such as the pointed cap and their industriousness show that the Heinzelmännchen belong to the group of goblins, gnomes and dwarves.
This Cologne fountain is located near the cathedral and opposite Cologne's oldest brewery, the Früh, on Am Hof street.

The Heinzelmännchen Fountain was donated in 1899 by the Cologne Beautification Association to commemorate the centenary of August Kopisch's birthday. It was designed by Edmund and Heinrich Renard. For the two, father and son, the fountain's very secular theme was something new, as they usually created religious works of art.

"If you cross Roncalliplatz, the Heinzelmännchenbrunnen is right across from the "Brauhaus Früh". Hardly any other monument is so typical of Cologne. The legend of the good men who do the work of the lazy ones at night has been fondly celebrated by the people of Cologne for centuries passed on."
