Basel train station since 1845

In the 19th century, traffic and industrialization changed Basel: in 1832, a steamship docked here for the first time. Eight years later, the first railway in Switzerland ran on the Saint-Louis–Basel route, and a station was opened within the city walls in 1845. Soon, trains were running daily to Paris and Frankfurt.

The Basel SBB train station (usually called Basel SBB, less often Centralbahnhof or Schweizer Bahnhof) is the largest border station in Europe and the largest and most important train station in the city. Trains run to Switzerland, Italy and Germany, as well as TGVs to France. Regional trains to Alsace run from Basel, the Alsatian train station, which is attached to the SBB train station, but has its own platform hall with its own tracks and is separated from the SBB train station by a customs barrier. Most of the long-distance trains, as well as an S-Bahn line and a few other local trains to Germany end or start here. They also stop at the Badischer Bahnhof, the second largest train station in the city, which is operated by Deutsche Bahn.

The representative building with a neo-baroque façade was built between 1905 and 1907 by Emil Faesch and Emanuel La Roche.
