The so-called "Swedish crosses" are memorial crosses in memory of people killed as victims of the troops who roamed the country and often marauded (plundered) during those warlike times (first half of the 17th century). In the strictest sense of the word definition, however, they are not "atonement crosses" because such crosses were to be erected by the perpetrators - as part of the atonement (penance) for their crime - whereas memorial crosses were erected by people from the victim's immediate environment (often family members, possibly friends or neighbors).

A beautiful resting place with a historical core:

The "Swedish Cross" is a medieval cross made of sandstone. It stands on the old footpath from Quentel over the mountain forest to St. Ottilien, called the "Kreuzweg". Originally it stood about 50 m further east at the end of the sunken path and was moved to its current location in 1911.
