      Before the reservoir was built, around 2,750 people had to leave their homes - houses, farms and businesses. Geologists, engineers and the many hundreds of workers faced major challenges on what was then one of the most spectacular construction sites in Europe.

      It all began in 1938: Because the emerging industry and the population of the Ruhr region needed more and more water, the then Ruhr Dam Association decided to build a large water reservoir in the Sauerland.

      Work began in 1957. The construction extended over 20 kilometers. Railway lines were relocated, tunnels were drilled and around 70 kilometers of new roads were built, including eight large valley bridges. The whole thing took eight years.

      But the construction of the Bigge Dam is not just a story of great engineering: the residents in the reservoir area were relocated to new places such as Neu-Listernohl or Neu-Sondern. They had to watch as their villages were razed to the ground.

      Nevertheless, the Biggesee became a success story. It is also the children and grandchildren of the former valley residents who have made the lake one of the most exciting natural experience areas in North Rhine-Westphalia. Here you can sail, row, stand-up paddle. Or let yourself be catapulted into the air by the only blobbing facility in the area. Over the decades, the sunken homeland became the Riviera of the Sauerland.
