Bertoldsbrunnen, Freiburg im Breisgau
Anyone looking for a classic fountain with gargoyles and a large basin at the famous “Berti”, as the people of Freiburg affectionately call it, will be baffled at first.
In everyday life, the Bertoldsbrunnen is actually more of a location name than a monument. Here, at the intersection of the Kaiser-Joseph-Straße shopping street and Salzstraße, all four tram lines have their central junction. This is probably why the “Berti” is the number one meeting point and is more bustling than almost any other place in Freiburg.
Anyone who manages to cross the street between trams, visitors and Freiburg residents will find a limestone base about four meters high, crowned with an abstract bronze equestrian statue. The monument, which is dedicated to the Dukes of Zähringen and named after the founder of the city, Duke Bertold, stands in a narrow, shallow water basin. It was inaugurated in 1965 and replaces the fish fountain that was destroyed in the Second World War.
“See you at 6 p.m. at Berti!” But don’t forget to specify the exact side, e.g. “Ecke LA” - at the Löwenapotheke, abbreviated to this, you will quickly find your appointment in the hustle and bustle of “Berti”!

The Bertoldsbrunnen is the central transport hub in the city center. Here the Salz- and Bertoldstraße intersect with the Kaiser-Jospeh-Straße. At the monument to city founder Bertold von Zähringen, almost all urban rail lines intersect. That's another reason why he is a popular meeting place.
Predecessor of the Bertoldsbrunnen was until the Second World War the fishing well of 1908, which was destroyed in the war. The subsequently built Zähringer Fountain was also destroyed during the air raid on November 27, 1944.

The Bertoldsbrunnen is located at one of the most central points in the city, namely at the intersection of Salzstrasse and Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse. Since the early 19th century, it has been a trading and meeting place for the former inhabitants of Freiburg.
Today, almost all of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG tram lines converge at this point.
Until the Second World War, the fish fountain from 1806 adorned the intersection. However, it was destroyed by a bombing raid and a copy was erected on the north side of the cathedral.
The fish fountain was replaced by the Zähringer fountain, which was ultimately also completely destroyed by bombs in an air raid on November 27, 1944.
A replica was rejected and thus a timeless, abstract monument was created.
It is dedicated to the Dukes of Zähringen, founders and lords of Freiburg. The approximately four-meter-high stone base in the shallow water basin is crowned by an abstract equestrian statue.
