71 meters long, 32.60 meters wide and today with the south gable over 36 meters high. These are the dimensions of the basilica. Around 310 it was built by the Roman emperor Constantine as a palace hall (throne room). In the middle of the 19th century, the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV restored the building as a church for the Protestant community. The basilica can accommodate up to 1,300 people.

The Evangelical Church of the Redeemer (Konstantinbasilika) in Trier (Augusta Treverorum) was originally a Roman palace auditorium. It was built as an audience hall for the Roman emperors who resided in the city in the 4th century. The naming after Constantine the Great as the Constantine Basilica reminds of this time and purpose. The name of the building as a basilica comes from the local history researcher Johannes Steiner in the 19th century, who took it from a late antique eulogy for the emperor Constantine. From today's perspective, it is unsuitable because it does not correspond to the type of building of a basilica, but to that of a hall church. The honorary Catholic title of basilica does not apply either, because the building was never a Catholic church.
In the early Middle Ages, the burned-out ruins came into the possession of the Trier bishops. They converted this into a castle-like property. In 1614 the south and east walls were torn down and the rest was integrated into the new bishop's residence, the Electoral Palace. The church-like building was restored between 1844 and 1856, consecrated on September 28, 1856 and handed over to the evangelical parish, which has been using it as a church since then. On August 14, 1944, the basilica was badly damaged by an American air raid and burned down completely. The reconstruction took place in the 1950s. The design of the interior was reduced to stone-faced exterior walls and a wooden coffered ceiling.

Since 1986 the Constantine Basilica has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Roman Monuments, Cathedral and Church of Our Lady in Trier”. It is also a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention. The apse in the north, the west wall, remains of walls from previous buildings below the present-day floor and remains of Roman exterior paintings on the west and north facades have been preserved in the Roman building fabric. Interestingly, the building already had underfloor heating. Air warmed by wood fire or charcoal embers passed through a fume hood and heated the (now defunct) marble floor and walls.

On the right side in the nave, there are the heads of the 4 evangelists and Jesus. from left to right: Luke, Matthew, Jesus Christ, Mark, John
In the 1870s and 1880s, the Frankfurt sculptor Gustav Kaupert created five marble sculptures for the basilica. They represented Jesus Christ and the evangelists and were supplemented around 1900 with apostle figures of Peter and Paul based on a design by August Wittig. The statues were destroyed when the church was rebuilt. Today only the heads of the Kaupert figures are preserved. They were restored in 2001 and in 2006 on the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the basilica as the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer on the east wall of the basilica with a trilingual lettering.

This large rectangular brick building was originally the auditorium of the imperial palace that Constantine had built around 310. The imposing building has been renovated several times, but was restored to its original state in the 19th century. A Protestant church has been located there since 1954. Due to its enormous dimensions, the very simple interior is particularly impressive.

Basilica is directly adjacent to the Electoral Palais. Completely different construction as other churches. In the interior no columns, everything very simple. Very impressive. Access free.

An unbelievably impressive church building, especially due to the size of the room combined with the incredible simplicity. Those who like this will find a somewhat similar atmosphere, albeit significantly smaller, in St. Valierus in Trier-Weismark.

Egbert Broerken, model of the Constantine Basilica, 2015, bronze casting, Constantine Basilica, Trier
The bronze miniature of the Basilica of Constantine is located in close proximity to the stone original. With its information in Braille about the former throne room of the Roman emperors who resided in Trier, the bronze model also offers a haptic perception of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed by the artist Egbert Broerken (*1950) from Welver in Westphalia, the bronze edition of the miniature basilica was manufactured in the Plein bronze foundry in Speicher.

Broerken from the city of Münster created his first model for blind and sighted people. It takes him an average of nine months to photograph the individual buildings from all sides, develop a model and cast this model. His collaboration with the Westphalian School for the Blind in his hometown of Soest has enabled Broerken to design his models in such a way that they can be touched as well and as insightfully as possible. Egbert Broerken now receives orders all over Europe and enjoys this opportunity to provide relief for blind people and to integrate them more deeply into society:

»When blind citizens feel the city in which they have lived for a long time but which they were never able to understand with their hands in fascination, then it is always a moving moment for me.«

The Constantine Basilica is certainly worth a visit in Trier. Unfortunately it is not always open. So not always something to experience on the Camino de Santiago.
