Zeist Castle

Once the pleasure resort of Willem Adriaan, Count of Nassau-Odijk and grandson of Prince Maurits.

Now the ideal setting for royal events, soaking up history or enjoying art and culture.

Willem Adriaan bought the manor of Zeist and the dilapidated medieval castle from the States of Utrecht. He started building a pleasure garden with the collaboration of the architects Jacob Roman, a Leiden city architect and later stadtholder architect, and Daniël Marot, a French Huguenot of international fame.

Slot Zeist is a seventeenth-century castle in the Dutch municipality of Zeist that was built as a pleasure resort for Willem Adriaan van Nassau. The castle was designed by architect Jacobus Roman. The castle is surrounded by an English landscape park and the Brother and Sister Square.

The territory on which the castle was built was mentioned in 1165 as the property of one Godefridus van Seyst, without mention of a house. In 1536, buildings are mentioned when "that house in Seyst, free of its own property" is recognized by the States of Utrecht as a knight's court town.
