The monumental Place Bellecour was a swampy area in the Middle Ages that was used as a dumping ground, until the Archbishop of Lyon bought it and turned it into a walled garden. City residents called it "Bella Curtis", which means beautiful garden. Over time, the name was changed to Bellecour. It is currently the largest square in the city: 310 by 200 meters (with red gravel).
