The Heilig Kreuz monastery in Donauwörth is a former Benedictine abbey.

The monastery consecrated to the Holy Cross was founded around 1040 by Mangold I von Werd as a Benedictine monastery. The spiritual founding gift was part of the cross of Christ that Mangold received in Constantinople.

This church, which is dedicated to the Holy Cross (Latin "Santa Croce"), relates its patron saint to the cross on which Jesus Christ died. The veneration of the Holy Cross goes back in large part to Saint Helena, who was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who, after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" outside Rome, recognized Christianity as a religion and in 312 the long time of persecution ended with the Milan “Tolerance Edict”). In the early fourth century she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Helena is therefore often depicted with a cross as an attribute. The church celebrates the feast of the discovery of the Holy Cross – called “Exaltation of the Cross” – on September 14th.

The Heilig Kreuz monastery in Donauwörth is a former Benedictine abbey. The monastery, dedicated to the Holy Cross, was founded around 1040 as a Benedictine monastery. As a spiritual founding gift, the monastery received a part of the cross of Christ. At the beginning of the 12th century, the nunnery was replaced by a Benedictine men's monastery and moved to the western edge of the city and at the same time to its highest geographical location within the wall ring. After the buildings were damaged in the Thirty Years' War, Abbot Amandus Röls set about building a new church after the Wars of Spanish Succession. In the Rococo era (1770/1780) the buildings were remodeled and expanded several times.

The monastery was dissolved on January 15, 1803 in the course of secularization. The monastery church remained as the church of the parish of Heilig-Kreuz and as a pilgrimage church.
