Charlottenburg is a district within the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough of Berlin.
Founded as a town in 1705, Charlottenburg became a major city in 1893.
When it was incorporated into Greater Berlin in 1920, it became the independent borough of Charlottenburg.
Previously, Charlottenburg had at times been the municipality with the highest per capita tax revenue in Germany.
Following the merger with the former borough of Wilmersdorf to form the new borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf during the 2001 administrative reform, the borough of Charlottenburg was downgraded to a district.
