The Gewandhaus, first documented in 1303, was the warehouse and department store of the Gewandschneider (cloth merchants), the noblest guild of the old town in the Middle Ages. It was extended several times to the west and east and received in 1588-1592 with the redesign of the two gables under the direction of Hans Lampe, councilor of the Altewiek, his current face in the style of the Renaissance. The eastern gable was executed 1590-1591 by Balthasar Kircher and Jürgen Röttger. During the Second World War the house was badly damaged. In 1948-1950 it was rebuilt, partly reconstructed. The north wall remained undeveloped. Here, the Renaissance portal of the Hagenmarkt pharmacy, which was destroyed in the war, was added as a new access. The building is used by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Braunschweig and a restaurant.

The Gothic hall and the adjoining vaults of the building have housed some excellent restaurants over the years (such as Stechinellis Kartoffelkeller) and have been used primarily for weddings, company celebrations and public events since 2013.
