One of the most important Catholic places of worship in Puglia, the Cathedral of Otranto saw the light in the twelfth century, on previous settlements of the Messapian, Roman and early Christian periods. Of particular artistic importance is the mosaic inside, commissioned in 1163 by the archbishop of Otranto Gionata and executed by the monk Pantaleone.
