Ernen is always worth a visit. A beautiful little Valais village with old, narrow streets. Especially recommended during the music festivals in August. There are wonderful concerts in the small church.

Ernen is a Valais mountain village of great cultural and historical importance. It is conveniently located between the Albrun, Griess, Furka and Grimsel passes and has benefited from this location for centuries as a transport hub. The construction of a modern road and the railway line on the other side of the Rhone valley put the town on the sidelines in terms of traffic and led to an economic decline.
Examples of the former wealth of the community are striking buildings such as the town hall (1762), the Tellenhaus (1578) (municipal administration), the Kapuzinerhaus (1511), the schoolhouse (1538), the Mathäus-Schiner-Haus (1603), the St. Georg House (1629), the Sigristen-Jost House (1580) (museum). The baroque church and various chapels are significant in terms of art history: the chapel of St. Anthony of Padua (1684) in Niederernen, the Maria Hilf chapel in the Ernerwald (1690-1709), the Tellenhaus shows the oldest Tell frescoes in Switzerland. Cardinal Matthäus Schinner (1465-1522) was born in the Mühlebach district. He was a bishop, cardinal, papabile and prince of the church.

The small village of Ernen is famous for its award-winning villagescape. Stroll through the streets between the romantic wooden houses and visit the church of St. George. In Ernen you will also find several shops and cafés.

Ernen was awarded as the best preserved village in Switzerland, which is still mostly in its original state at that time.
Especially when it has rained, there is an incredible smell of wood.

Zendenrathau, Ernen
The court, prison and gallows of Zenden Goms had been in Ernen since the middle of the 15th century. The old court house stood a little further to the west of the current building of the wall, which was built around 1750. With the political reorganization of the Valais after the French era, the house came into the possession of the municipality of Erenen. On several occasions there were renovation plans for the house; So the community wanted to expand it into a school building around 1880.The Zendenrathaus stands on the east side of the Hengert. The tuff-framed openings in the front side of the three-story, high rectangular wall block are combined to form window axes. Inside there were two dungeon cells in the lowered basement, the torture chambers on the ground floor and the courtroom above. The former courthouse has now become a museum; A rich collection of documents is on display on the top floor, including parchments with seals from the 14th and 15th centuries and an original letter from Cardinal Matthäus Schiner from 1517
