Catholic Church of St. Anthony of Padua, Antonspl. 21, Vienna

At the end of the 19th century there was only one church in Favoriten, the parish church on Keplerplatz, consecrated in 1876, which was responsible for 100,000 people. This made it necessary to build another church in the district, which Archbishop Anton Josef Gruscha wanted to consecrate to St. Anthony of Padua, Gruscha's namesake. The foundation stone for the church was laid on November 10, 1896 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph. Exactly six years later, the church consecration took place in 1902, again in the presence of the archbishop and the emperor. The plans came from the architect Franz von Neumann, the execution was carried out by the court master builder Josef Schmalzhofer. The history painter August von Wörndle provided the equipment, while the organ was built by Johann M. Kauffmann.

During the Second World War, the Antonskirche was badly hit by bombs on November 6th and December 11th, 1944. The dome, the organ gallery, parts of the towers and the nave and the wall paintings were destroyed. Although reconstruction began right after the end of the war, it took until 1961 for the restoration to be completed. It was directed by architect Anton Steflicek. Due to a lack of money, the decision was made at the time to simply paint the interior white and to do without wall paintings.
