If you arrive at the Amsterdam train station by train, you should definitely look around there. The building itself, designed by Pierre Cuypers (the architect of the Rijksmuseum) and opened in 1889, is one of the city's most iconic buildings.

The building is made of red brick with natural stone decorations and the architectural style was influenced by the Dutch Renaissance. The projecting main entrance was deliberately designed by Cuypers as a "city gate" with two towers, giving passengers the impression of entering the city through "the gate". The ornaments of the towers show scenes of the former trade, industry and shipping.
The pediment shows the coat of arms between two lions. Among them are fourteen coats of arms of cities, including Berlin, St. Petersburg and Paris, which were then reached by rail.
Amsterdam Centraal was built on three artificial islands and stands because of the sandy, damp ground on about 9000 wooden posts. On October 15, 1889, the station was opened, replacing the stations "Willemspoort" and "Station Westerdok".
