The airport with an area of 56 ha was built in 1926 by the Silesian Province of the State Air Defense League, and then leased to the Ministry of Transport. In addition to the landing field (with a 5000 candle light for night flights), it had two hangars (communication and sports) and an administration building with a weather station and a passenger terminal (see below).
At the airport, there was an air military training center organized by the Aero Club of Silesia, which ran, among others gliding training (from take-off in the tow behind the plane) [3].
Passenger flights to Warsaw were launched by Polish Airlines "LOT" on January 2, 1929. They were carried out once a day and were served by an eight-person Fokker F.VIIa / 1m plane; the flight lasted 1.5 hours. The last voyage was made on August 30, 1939.
In addition to the Warsaw direction, there were also air connections to Krakow and (until April 30, 1930) to Vienna via Brno.
The passenger terminal of the Katowice-Muchowiec airport, with a waiting room and a restaurant, was built in the 1930s, when the city, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship, was at its peak of development.
