The castle is home to the Hall Art Foundation, a great stop for art lovers. Changing contemporary art exhibitions await you within the castle walls, and a sculpture park is spread throughout the grounds. Derneburg Castle itself is unfortunately not open to the public. From the parking lot – by the glasshouse – the path leads a short distance around the buildings of the former estate. On the east side behind the buildings begins a small circular hiking trail around the entire complex, the so-called Laves Cultural Trail. From here, you can embark on a short journey through time, exploring the history of the family of the first Derneburg Count, Ernst Friedrich Herbert zu Münster, and the Hanoverian construction director, Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves.

It is best to park in the parking lot opposite the glass house, then just head towards the castle and follow the really good signs for the Laves culture trail.
Passing old trees you get to the tea house relatively quickly, then a little downhill to the pyramid mausoleum, next station the fishermen's houses. Then follow the road a little and keep right after the bridge. Passing further lakes you will then get back to the starting point.

After Derneburg had been in the possession of the Münster family for five generations, Peter Graf zu Münster sold the last property in 1975 to Georg Baselitz, one of the most renowned contemporary artists in Germany. In 1995 Georg Baselitz had the large studio built in the castle park. He lived and worked in Derneburg until 2006. In the same year, the castle came into the possession of the American art collector Andrew Hall, who first acquired the extensive contemporary art collection of Georg Baselitz and then the castle and the farm buildings of the Derneburg domain. The newly founded Schloss Derneburg Corporation completely renovated the castle and converted it for the presentation of exhibitions. This facility is an absolute must.
So well preserved with all the trimmings, this "castle" is my favorite. The small circular route is very nice to take great pictures. And you have everything worth seeing on the tour around the facility with you. The highlight of the whole tour is the mausoleum.
When the weather is better, we will take the longer bike tour to explore the surrounding castles and sights. There is enough information material about it in Derneburg and the surrounding area.
