On the landward side, a facing stone is attached to the stone parapet. It bears the year 1771. This is the year of the restoration of the Double Gate. Until the year 1845, the city was protected by closing the heavy city gates at night.

This gate, also called 'Double Gate', was built after the construction of the new fortifications in the seventeenth century. The older Dobbele Poort (Keldermanspoort in the vernacular), the ruins of which can be seen a little further on, lost its function due to this construction. The curvatures in the access roads and the gate itself have been deliberately designed this way. It was to prevent the city from being bombarded unhindered by enemy rifles and cannons. In the twentieth century, the gate was expanded with a second passage and a pedestrian tunnel. The rampart is extra high here (more than ten meters), because the outer area could not be flooded due to its high location. Such an 'inundation' was then one of the means to keep enemies out of the city.
