Brunnen port facility ferry terminal, Brunnen
The existence of a ship weir in Brunnen was first documented in 1554 thanks to a written call for help from the governor and council of Schwyz to Lucerne. By January 25, 1850 at the latest, when the steamship "Gotthard" ran into piles in front of the Wehrihaggen and was badly damaged, even strangers knew about the existence of rows of piles in the lake in front of Brunnen. But it was not until 1992 and 1996 that these much-discussed and differently interpreted wooden piles from the past could be examined and dated. The piles in front of the Waldstätterhof Hotel and in front of the fish farm below the Schroten are the remains of high and late medieval port facilities and breakwaters to protect docked ships. The vast majority of them date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Individual piles are palisades with the tip pointing outwards and indicate military precautions. This proves that Brunnen was used as a Schwyz port on the Gotthard route.

        Foehn harbor, Brunnen
When the Gotthard road was built in 1830, transit traffic received a huge boost. Travelers could now travel by boat to Flüelen and then use the stagecoach to the Italian border. The weather, including the sometimes unpredictable foehn, was a familiar companion. The foehn could even be dangerous for the steamship "Stadt Luzern", which began steamship operations on September 24, 1837. Consequently, in 1862 the government council of Schwyz was asked to authorize the construction of a foehn-safe location in Brunnen. However, in October 1872 Captain Glättli was able to land the steamship "Viktoria" at the "Föhnbrücke" in Schroten for the first time. Further negotiations for a more suitable location were positive in June 1879 and the village community of Brunner agreed to the construction of a foehn harbor at the current location. In September 1879, under the direction of the Brunner architect Karl Hürlimann, construction began on a fortified foehn harbor.
