At the time the monastery was founded, Lambach was the seat of the Counts of Wels-Lambach. Saint Adalbero, Bishop of Würzburg, was the son of this noble family. The founding of the monastery in 1056 by converting it into a Benedictine monastery goes back to Bishop Adalbero. He died in Lambach in 1090, his grave with a cover plate is in the baroque collegiate church.

Among other things, the monastery contains the oldest Romanesque frescoes in the southern German-speaking region and the Baroque theater from 1770, the oldest playable theater in Austria. 15 members of the order are currently serving in the monastic community. Guided tours of the monastery take place daily at 2 p.m. from Easter to All Saints’ Day.

It has a very eventful history, in recent times, for example, due to unwanted "tourism" or as the location of the "People & Horse" state exhibition in 2016.
