The Muldestausse is a former opencast mining hole, the Muldenstein opencast mine, which was flooded through the Mulde. The flooding took place in 1975 and was completely completed after 9 months. Due to the flooding, the course of the trough was diverted. At that time, coal was mined there and the construction work for the reservoir cost 180 million GDR marks. At the inlet there is an inlet structure that keeps the trough at a certain height. The dam forms a bridge where there are artificial spillways between the pillars. The Muldestausee is located in the Bitterfeld district. Due to the low height of the dam and the high inflow of the Mulde, flood protection is likely to be low, but peak inflow is still dampened and delayed due to the retention effect. The design flood is a whopping 2200 m³/s, an extremely high discharge rate.
