    The Junkernschloss (also called lower castle in distinction to the upper castle) is the ruins of a former moated castle in the community Driedorf in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis in Hessian Westerwald.
    Before 1280 was here in the Rehbach-Mühlbach Valley a seat of the Lords of Greifenstein. In a dispute this fell to Otto I. (Nassau), who built between 1280 and 1290 on the remains of the old castle complex the square moated castle with courtyard and palas.

    Originally, the castle was strategic only. From 1303, however, she served Count Emich I of Nassau-Hadamar as a residence. This obtained for the castle upstream settlement in 1305 city rights. By sale the castle came to Otto II of Nassau-Dillenburg, who gave it in 1347 to the Junkers Johann and Wiegand von Mudersbach to fief. Since then, the castle is called Junkernschloss.

        On some pictures it seems as if the ruins of the castle are located outside in a meadow. However, she is in the middle of town which surprised me a lot. Definitely worth a visit.

              From the remaining ruins of the Junkern Castle or Driedorf Castle, you can imagine how impressive it must have been at the time.
              The square is beautifully laid out and there is also a children's playground here, so this place will never be forgotten.
