The varied Hunte rises in the Wiehengebirge, crosses the Dümmer, flows through the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park towards Oldenburg and flows into the Weser northwest of Bremen.

It flows through a hilly landscape shaped by the Ice Age: pine and oak forests provide shade for canoeists on the water; Heathland and sandy beaches, fields and lush meadows surround the romantic river landscape. The section between the Dümmer and Wildeshausen is used by canoeists and rowers as an area. In 2013, the steel sculpture "Goldregen" by the Friesoyth blacksmith Alfred Bullermann was erected at a canoe dock next to a weir immediately south of the "Golden Bridge" spanning the Hunte, which connects the districts of Vechta and Diepholz.

The 41 km long section between Wildeshausen and Oldenburg is suitable as a paddling area for beginners and occasional paddlers. The river here is between 12 and 20 meters wide, the flow speed is low at around two kilometers per hour. There are no weirs or other obstacles, no motorized shipping traffic. The section above Wildeshausen has 14 weirs that require the boats to be portaged. From April 1st to June 15th, there is a ban on navigating here for nature conservation reasons. During the rest of the time, there is a boat size limit of 6 m in length and 1 m in width.
