The most beautiful building on Alkmaar's most important street is the Town Hall.

It was built between 1509 and 1520. A smaller town hall had previously stood on this site, on the edge of the then center, which was centered around the Grote Kerk.

Fortunately, the town hall survived the looting by Grote Pier in 1517.

It wasn't even finished then. But a large part of the old medieval archives

were unfortunately lost. The building has been restored and expanded several times,
for example, with the adjoining Moriaanshoofd, a once well-frequented inn.
